Listerine Toenail Fungus Cure Tips

June 14th, 2008 Dr.EswararamananVR Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

If you’ve been trying to find an easier way of dealing with podiatry problems, then the Listerine toenail fungus cure might be the answer to your prayers. Before we get into the pros and cons of using this method to treat your foot problems, you first need to know what caused the problem in the first place.

What is Toenail Fungus?

The problem is caused when fungus begins to grow beneath your toenail. Usually, this is caused either by damage to the nail which makes it easy for the fungus to get beneath it or by the wearing of wet or sweaty socks. Remember that fungus grows best in dark and damp conditions. Your socks and shoes can be the ideal environment, therefore, for its growth. Generally, toenail fungus isn’t painful. However, it does cause your toenail to become discolored and thick.

How It Is Normally Treated?

Once you have this problem, most podiatrists will tell you the problem won’t go away without drastic action. How drastic? Well, the recommended treatment is total removal of the infected nail. If you don’t choose that option, you can use anti-fungal medications and apply them to the area. These medications are available over-the-counter and aren’t expensive but they also won’t cure your problem. Oral medications are rarely prescribed by physicians because they just don’t work on toenail fungus very often and can cause serious side effects in patients.

What is the Listerine Cure?

We all know that Listerine is a powerful mouthwash. It was the first mouthwash to be sold commercially and actually began as an anesthetic thanks to the inclusion of menthol in the formula. Additionally, the product contains an antiseptic agent known as thymol. Thymol has also been shown in some studies to have anti-fungal properties, particularly when used on fingernails and toenails. Basically, the Listerine application involves making use of this thymol.

How does the Listerine Work?

Although different people have different recommendations, most suggest soaking your toenail in either 100% Listerine or in a combination of 50% Listerine and 50% vinegar. You should soak the nail for around 30 minutes daily. Dry the area well - remember you don’t want to stick your wet toe back into a dark area immediately. Don’t expect results right away. Fungal infections are hard to fight and require consistent treatment for months. Eventually, however, the thymol will succeed in stopping the growth of the fungus. At that point, you can cut the affected part of the toenail off with regular clippers and allow the healthy nail to re-grow in its place.

Preventing the Problem

Many people who need the Listerine toenail fungus cure have a hereditary predisposition to the development of the problem. Basically, if one or both of your parents had infected nails then you stand a good chance of following their example. To prevent the problem, always keep your socks dry and clean. Also, make sure your shoes allow good circulation. Using powder in your socks and keeping your nails healthy can also help.

Bibliotherapy: Freeing Yourself From Depression, Anxiety, Stress And OCD

June 14th, 2008 KarenHastings, Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

If you feel that you could manage your depression, anxiety, OCD or stress if only you had the tools, then why not try a good self-help book. This is a cheaper option for those who cannot afford private therapy or give those waiting to see an NHS Cognitive Behavioural Therapists (CBT), the foundation to begin to manage their own mental-health.

There is wealth of self-help books out there and it can be overwhelming deciding which ones will be most useful. I regularly prescribe reading and practical exercises taken from self-help manuals as part of CBT and NLP treatment at my therapy practice in Edinburgh. In this article, I list and describe some of the books that I have found most useful in relation to specific problems, in a bid to make choosing the book for you a bit easier!

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

My book of choice is “Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques” by David Veale and Rob Willson. This book is a clear and practical step-by-step guide to regaining control of your OCD and your life! The book contains a CBT approach that is specifically aimed at OCD. This is very important since some CBT approaches used to treat other problems such as anxiety and depression can be unhelpful when applied to OCD. This book is applicable to OCD in it’s varying forms, e.g. for those who experience pure obsessions, for those who carry out internal mental rituals and for those who display compulsive behaviours. What I like about this book is that it is very frank and can help to show the person with OCD that they need not be ashamed of the content of their intrusive thoughts, images and urges. Some of the people I work with using CBT in Edinburgh, have found that they need help in applying the book from a therapist.

For Depression

I recommend “ The Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Depression” by William Knaus. This book combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy and common sense in an easy to follow format that includes practical exercises that can help you find your way out of a depressive state. By practicing the techniques presented in the book, you can learn the skills to defeat depressive thinking. The book takes into account all factors related to being depressed that can make any action difficult and gives you tips on how to deal with procrastination, lack of energy and motivation.

I also recommend “The Mindful way Through Depression – Freeing Yourself From Chronic Unhappiness” by Williams, Teasdale, Segal and Zinn. Mindfulness is a technique that has its origins in Buddhism but that is used without any religious connotations within the field of cognitive therapy to help people learn to break the cycle of mental habits such as rumination and self-blame which perpetuate depression. Mindfulness involves disengaging from this type of mental activity. This book is written in the format of a program and includes a CD to follow of guided mindfulness meditation practices.

Mindfulness techniques are very useful for anxiety and OCD disorders also.

For Anxiety and Stress

A useful book that I use with people seeking CBT therapy, Edinburgh is “The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook” by Edmund Bourne. This is a really comprehensive book that gives step-by-step guidance in overcoming anxiety and covers various factors including relaxation and meditation skills, exercise, coping with panic, dealing with negative self-talk and irrational beliefs, visualisation, self-esteem, medication, nutrition and more.

Finally a book that it more general but useful for anxiety, depression or stress is “Mind Over Mood - Change the Way you Feel by Changing The Way You Think” by Greenberger and Padesky This is a simple to follow book that really targets illogical and irrational thinking styles that drive depression and anxiety. It includes worksheets to follow.

Finally, its important to remember when considering a book to begin self-help that like therapy, self-help books and the exercises they direct you to do, must be practiced diligently and consistently in order to work.

Weight Loss Surgery: Gastric Bypass Questions Answered

June 13th, 2008 LisaOrtega Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

Is weight loss something you have struggled with for years? Are you suffering from life altering and/or threatening obesity? There are a number of treatment options available to those who suffer from weight related health issues. Weight gain and obesity can hinder everyday activities and can make living life extremely difficult in many ways. It is thus important to address such issues with a lifestyle change and a visit with a plastic surgeon.

Weight loss surgery options include the gastric bypass procedure, which is one way of altering the internal structure of the digestive tract to change the way food is processed, broken down, and assimilated into the body. The direction that the food moves is altered and the stomach’s size is also altered. A gastric bypass makes it harder for the body to fully digest body and thus helps to prevent weight gain from fat ingestion. This procedure is generally best for those who are suffering from obesity and who are facing serious health dysfunctions and future serious ailments. The procedure is a last resort to help process weight loss that is mandatory if good health is to be possible.

It is obvious that weight loss surgery is an important consideration if a patient is seriously overweight and may suffer from heart failure or other health problems caused by the weight gain. Aside from this however, surgery must always be complemented with new lifestyle practices that support the surgery. This means that one’s diet must be in alignment with the desire to lose weight and become even healthier. Altering the diet and incorporating physical exercise are great ways to help facilitate weight loss. Weight loss surgery is a last resort option and very often it will help the patient to lose weight, but to become healthy, it is vital that exercise and a diet change be implemented. Losing weight does not designate health and a healthy diet cannot be substituted over time. The health of the internal organs and bones and tissues of the body must be supported by a healthy diet regardless of surgery.

Having a gastric bypass surgery is an invasive procedure that a trained plastic surgeon must discuss with the patient. Asking questions is a very important part of the patient-surgeon consultation and it is encouraged that patients fully understand the procedure from start to finish. This helps to keep the patient informed of the procedure and aware of what to expect. Furthermore, this keeps the patient fully aware of their own body and how it will be functioning, what to expect, and what side effects are associated with the procedure. When it comes to surgery as invasive as a gastric bypass surgery, the patient should be fully aware of how their body will be changing and how they can expect the procedure to increase their livelihood over time. By staying aware of the changes being made to the body, the patient can also more quickly understand and notice if anything is happening that is not normal and that may need to be corrected by the plastic surgeon. Regardless of whether weight loss surgery is right for you, altering lifestyle and diet habits are crucial to any weight loss process, as well as getting back to health decisions.

This is important when it comes to understanding plastic surgeries and the many options available.

There are a number of ways to handle procedures in minimally invasive ways and this can include less recovery time, less discomfort, less blood loss, less scarring, and many other perks. To find out whether or not your plastic surgeon offers minimally invasive procedures, it is best to ask about the technology used, the equipment in the office, and how cutting edge it is. Doing personal research is also a great idea to understand how a procedure is performed and what the latest in medical technology offers to patients. With this information, plastic surgeries can be understood more fully and procedures can go much more smoothly. It is always the patient’s responsibility to come to a full understand of a procedure and this is also helpful in ironing out what the procedure will do for the patient, what the patient can expect to change either emotionally or psychologically as a result of a new appearance, and how the procedure will impact their life in other ways. Weight Loss Surgery: Answers on the Lap Band Procedure

June 13th, 2008 LisaOrtega Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

If weight loss becomes an issue, many seek out diet and exercise changes first. This is of course a great way to start any sort of weight loss routine and should be a part of every person’s desire to live a healthier life. There are a number of options available to those who seem unable to lose weight with diet and exercise changes, or who find sticking to diets to be difficult.

Having a lap band procedure involves altering the form of the internal digestive tract so that food moves through the body in a different manner. Likewise, the procedure alters how the food is digested, at what point, and how much the body will assimilate. The procedure involves blocking off a certain portion of the stomach’s space so that food cannot be consumed too rapidly. It helps to make sure that the patient feels “full” or is satisfied with their meal prior to eating too much, which is what helps to prevent further weight gain. It thus also helps to reduce weight by preventing too many calories from being consumed and digested. This is a way to lower the amount of calories ingested by altering the amount of food that the body is able to comfortably process. The lap band procedure is growing in popularity, is reversible, and is a weight loss surgery option that many plastic surgeons are utilizing to help their patients.

Anyone who is seeking weight loss surgery ought to of course examine what options are available to them and to become very clear on what procedures will most likely benefit them and their goals. There are different methods that plastic surgery has developed to help lower one’s weight and reduce the amount of food consumed at the same time. Asking plenty of questions and fully understanding the procedure of choice is a great way to most fully understand what and how the procedure is performed. This is an important part of the patient’s responsibility to their own health. Also, finding a plastic surgeon that is trusted and that the patient feels comfortable with is a good idea.

Regardless of whether or not the patient decides to undergo weight loss surgery, they must come to terms with the underlying issue related to the initial need of a lap band procedure. If diet and exercise are not a solid part of life prior, then finding a way to incorporate new ways of handling the weight are important. This involves committing to a diet change and a new fitness routine that benefit not only one’s weight loss goals but also one’s overall health. Health is an integrative process and remaining at an optimal weight does not mean that you are healthy nor does it mean that you are not in need of fitness. Fitness and diet are a huge part of this process and regardless of surgery, having a healthy body and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle is important. Weight loss should only be a result of that. With this, understanding the goals related to weight loss in general, and how the lifestyle will be altered, are important considerations to be aware of.

Another injection puts a solution into the problematic vein causing it to disintegrate. After the initial treatment, more than one may be needed depending on the vein that is being removed. Some of the minor side effects include bruising, pain, and slight stinging in the area. There are other risks involved that patients should of course become very familiar with prior to starting any sort of treatment.

This involves being aware of the veins in your legs and other extremities, which can be done with stretching and exercising outside of a Leawood vein clinic. This can help to keep the blood flowing, especially when blood begins to pool in the legs during long trips, for example, in cars or planes. Also, when standing or sitting for long periods of time, the body can begin to pool blood in the legs and this is another time when stretching and simply walking around can be helpful. Practical Treatments For Your Back Pain

June 13th, 2008 ChristaKowalczyk Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

If medical treatments, pain relievers are not working for you, there are various other ways in improving and preventing your low back pains. This can be done in very easy steps and procedures.

Our spinal cord is composed of four major parts, the cervical area, thoracic area, lumbar and sacral parts. Of all these parts, the lumbar area is the most affected when you have back pains. This component bears the weight of the upper body and the heavy objects we were lifting. This division has a main function which is to lighten the weight you are carrying and thus, it provides some help even if you walk with a 50 kilo lift.

Thus, with this important function, it can also have its consequences of pain or discomfort, particularly if you push these parts into their limits. All the division of the spinal cord is supported by strips of muscles, tendons and ligaments for their total mobility and weight resistance. If their limit is met you can have symptoms like back pain, tingling sensation into your legs or buttocks, easy fatigability of your back muscles and maybe some radiating pain on your upper back.

Pharmacological treatments or taking some medications can aid your pain and discomfort. Hence, these medications can cause more harm, especially if you do not know that the accompanying illnesses are. This is why it is not safe to take drugs wilfully, without initially asking your doctor about it. If you are feeling hopeless and do not want any medications, there are some practical guides that will help ease your pain and up lift the anxiety you are into.

First, your back will usually hurts at the time you wake up and after you have done some work. Here are some tips that can help release the tension after you wake up. Prior to that, it is important to know that the proper way of sleeping is also vital in order for you to achieve a painless awakening.

Before going to sleep, do a 15-minute exercise. A two up to three minute stretching and warming up by moving your arms and legs will do. This way, you can alternate the tightening of your muscles and eventually relaxing them. You can exercise slowly with no needed cardio work–up for this one. This means that smooth movements will do. Thus, doing this in the morning, with the same and even length of time, can help relieve your pain. This happens due to the fact that your muscles may be overly worked-out. This is also why proper stretching is needed before and after your job.

Hence, do not work-out if you are having severe pains. For this issue, you need to set a date for consultation with your health care provider.

Experiencing severe back pains is something you need to put your attention on. As for minimal back pains, you can have a certain position while sleeping. It should be like this: if you are sleeping on your back, put a 10 inch pillow under your knees or legs in order to facilitate a flexion of your hips and knees. This is to prevent the tightening of the tendons and muscles of your back. If you are sleeping at your side, this is actually good practice. This is due to the fact that a left side lying will be helpful not only on your spinal cord but also to your heart and blood circulation. While in this position you can strike a pose like having your knees and hips bent. This will aid the muscles and tendons to relax as you sleep. Thus, this can pose a way for reformation of any of your smooth muscle tears, if there is one. Thus, avoid sleeping on your abdomen, on your back or side with your legs straight.

Hence, with regards to the things you can do while at work: If you are standing long enough and you feel that there is a sort of pain coming, do not stand in one position for a long time. It will help if you will move from one position to another.

You can prevent low back pains from straining forward as well. This is by placing your foot on a stool or a step during prolonged standing. Plus, of course, do not lean forward without bending your knees. Aside from this, try to sit if there is a chance to do so.

While sitting, you can sit on a chair with your knees higher than your hips and support your arms on a chair or on your knees. You can also use a lumber roll or a pillow for sitting. If your work needs some lifting exercises, try to bend your knees first. This is accomplished with your back straight. Avoid lifting objects above the level of your elbows as well. Thus, practice may take time but it is imperative for you to do it, because in time, you will begin to feel the improvement on your back and posture. Maintaining your appropriate body weight can also be of assistance in order to reduce some extra load.

Furthermore, after a day’s work, you can put some hot packs at your back for about 15 minutes. The packs you will place should have tolerable heat. On the other hand, application of oil and having a massage will have a nice impact on your over all pain relief. Doing these simple and basic steps will really help ease the pain on your back and with the right posture and practice, the instances where in you will experience back pains will be reduced. For people who have intolerable pains at their lower back, make sure that you seek professional help or you consult your physician about it. This may be due to a more severe illness.

Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment For Arthritis

June 13th, 2008 DavidH. Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

Arthritis is a common yet troublesome ailment. Nevertheless, learning about its causes, symptoms, and treatment can help you alleviate the pain and other debilitating effects related to it.

It is true that having arthritis can be a very troubling and even painful experience. However, if you think that you have this ailment, you can still get a head start in making your situation better. To do this, you need to fully understand what arthritis is and what its causes, symptoms, and treatment are.

Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of joints in your body. This condition is normally present among people in their 50’s, although certain young individuals may also have it. There are several factors that can cause arthritis. First is genetics. Although medical experts are not sure on how much genetics can affect the development of arthritis, certain genetic variations have been proven to contribute to arthritis. The second is age. As an individual becomes older, the cartilage of his body becomes brittle and loses its capability to repair itself. When this happens, the development of arthritis may most likely occur.

The next factor that can cause arthritis is excess weight. If the joint has to support too much load, it would have a higher tendency to become damaged. Another cause of arthritis is previous injury. When a joint has been damaged by excessive or blunt force, irregularities may form in the joint’s smooth surface. Work hazards are another cause of arthritis. Studies have proven that people who work in assembly line and heavy construction have a high tendency to have arthritis.

After you have learned the possible causes of arthritis, you should identify its symptoms. You should, however, be aware that the symptoms of arthritis are not limited to the ones below. The first symptom of arthritis is joint pain. You may feel this joint pain while moving or doing an activity such as walking, writing, typing, or throwing something. The second symptom is inflammation. You may notice your joints becoming unusually warm, red, and/or stiff.

The next common symptom of arthritis is loss of range of motion or flexibility in your joints. You may notice that you could no longer move a specific joint to a position to which you could previously move it. Other symptoms of arthritis include irregular weight loss, extreme fatigue, non-specific fever, and joint deformity.

Now that you know the causes and symptoms of arthritis, you should learn about the ways of treating it. The first method of treating arthritis is exercise. You should exercise 20 to 30 minutes a day. However, you must avoid any type of exercise that causes joint pain which lasts one hour after the workout. In addition, you should manage to get a full eight-hour sleep every night. Sleep enables your body to regenerate, thus it lets joints heal naturally. Next, you should always remember to practice proper body posture. Stand straight and do not slouch. Lift heavy objects with your hip muscles and not your back. Another treatment for arthritis is physical therapy. Ask your doctor about the appropriate type of therapy for your case. An example is hydrotherapy, which involves mild exercises in the water. Moving on, you can apply warm compress on the affected joint. Do this for 20 minutes daily until the pain and swelling would subside. For severe cases of arthritis, you need to consult your doctor about the surgeries that could cure the said ailment.

Hair Loss Treatment – 7 Hair Growth Tips

June 12th, 2008 WongDarren Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

People often take their hair for granted until one day they realize that it is starting thin and fall out. Once you’re in this stage, hair regrowth becomes very difficult to achieve. Thus, it would be better if we start taking care of the health of our hair and scalp now, rather than regret not having done it later on.

A number of factors may influence how our hair will grow and how prone we are to hair loss. These may include hormonal changes, hereditary influences, environmental factors, and health. A change in lifestyle will definitely impact what would become of our hair in the future. Consider following the hair growth tips below in order to encourage the growth of hair strands that are less prone to dryness, breakage, and falling.

(1)Drink the recommended daily amount of water. Water here means pure water; it does not include other drinks such as soft drinks, coffee, and beer. Dehydration can make your entire body feel weak and easily exhausted. It is also another factor in the drying out and breakage of hair, as well as the stopping of its growth. The general rule is that men should drink 2.8 to 3.5 liters of water a day, while women should drink 2 to 2.6 liters daily. Adjust these amounts based on factors like weather condition, age, and weight.

(2)Exercise a couple of times a week. Studies show that a 15-minute brisk walk will increase your normal heart rate. This will then improve the blood circulation in our body, and this will bring more nutrients to our hair follicles and scalp. It would be best to exercise at least an hour after eating in order to give more time for digestion to finish and thus put less pressure on our system.

(3)Maintain a proper diet. Avoid foods that are rich in salt, sugar, and fat. Those three food components would only stress our kidneys and make our blood more acidic, resulting in hair loss.

(4)Drink green tea daily. Doing so will reduce the risk of hair loss. Green tea contains antioxidants that inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT induces hair loss and an increase in prostate size.

(5)Indulge in aromatherapy. This alternative form of medicine has benefits both on our health and mood. Massaging essential oils, such as lavender and olive, onto our scalp would encourage healthier hair regrowth. Moreover, it would help eliminate stress, which is another factor in hair loss.

(6)Avoid putting any strain on your scalp and hair in the form of tight clips and pony tails. The mechanical action of pulling your hair against the scalp can result in hair loss. Bald patches may arise from plucking out hair from the scalp often. This is known as traction alopecia.

(7)Avoid using heat and chemicals on your hair, such as straightening, perming, coloring, and excessive blow drying. These methods will only weaken the internal structure of your hair and damage its chemical bonds. They may also cause dryness and irritation, making your hair fall out more easily.

Choosing the Right Anxiety Treatment For You

June 12th, 2008 MikeSchlacter Posted in Medicines and Remedies No Comments »

If you recognize that you have anxiety issues that you need help with, and aren’t sure which anxiety treatment is best for you then you need to consider a few things.

First of all, how does the anxiety affect your life? Have you been officially diagnosed with anxiety issues by a professional such as doctor? If not, could your anxiety symptoms be linked to any other kind of health condition? Do you have other health issues? If so, do you take medication for these?

The main reason to consider these questions is because if you decide to go down a medicated path for your anxiety treatment then you may find that you first need to go through the necessary tests from a doctor who will rule out other causes of your symptoms before prescribing medication, and then you’ll need to find a medication that agrees with both your body and any other medication you take.

One of the most effective means of anxiety treatment however is to use your brain to control the symptoms. This means first you need to identify the main anxiety triggers so that you can work on overcoming these and so reduce the amount of anxiety you feel. Sometimes it can be something as simple as a yoga breathing exercise that allows you to move past the anxiety and live your life to the fullest. Other times it takes a more structured approach to visualizing the fears that you have which create the anxiety and analyzing why they have such an impact on you.

The one thing that you must keep in mind when walking down an anxiety treatment path that isn’t medicated, but rather relies on your commitment to getting your anxiety under control is that it’s not going to happen overnight. You may have huge revelations about underlying causes, but even though identifying these is a huge step, learning how to overcome them will take time. Don’t expect that this is going to be a short process. Allow yourself to heal the anxiety issues with techniques that you learn over time. Each step forward is a step in the right direction. Trying to force things by jumping a step you feel isn’t necessary could have you taking a step away from your goal of becoming anxiety free.

Take some time to think about your life and the instances where you have felt anxious. When was the first time you had some kind of panic attack? Has this impacted how you react to similar situations throughout your life? This is the kind of thing you’ll need to consider when choosing an anxiety treatment that’s not drug related. The positive side of this is that you aren’t burying the anxiety under a pile of chemicals. Instead you are taking a good look at your emotional health and sorting through anything that is creating problems in your life and causing the anxiety.

There are some people who have anxiety problems that do require medication, especially in the early stages because their level of anxiety is at such a level it’s damaging their overall health, but for many people learning techniques from media such as videos and books can have a permanently positive effect without taking medication. It’s your body and you know your situation better than anyone else, so if anxiety is an issue for you learn about the anxiety treatments available, and make an educated choice for the one that’s best for you.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a proven anxiety treatment to help you enjoy your life? It’s a reality. Read my review over at Linden Method review.
